If your baby does not act particularly sick, administer all the recommended methods to lower your child's temperature before calling the doctor. Remember, your doctor is more interested in how sick your child looks and acts rather than how high the temperature is. How your child responds to temperature lowering methods is one of the main concerns your doctor will have. The younger the the infant, the more worrisome the fever. Because, any fever in an infant less than four months old should be reported immediately to your doctor.

When examining your feverish child, your doctor is attempting to determine whether the fever is caused by a virus or a bacteria. Bacterial infections need antibiotics. Or your doctor may elect to wait a day or so before making a definite decision and request that you notify him of your child's progress.
