Harmful effect of cooking oil and butter on child’s development

Cook healthy fried dish for your child: In traditional way of cooking, oil is the main ingredients in preparation of fried foods. However, study shows, a diet that includes a large amount of fatty foods, such as fried dish, can contribute to many types of disease which include cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, arthritis, and many others.

In fact oil consumption may result to endothelial dysfunction. In layman’s term, this means failure of blood vessel cells or a cessation of the normal complex biochemical and hormonal functions of the cells lining blood vessels so that their control over widening of the arteries or vasodilation is lost by 32% after a meal and injures the endothelial cells.

So how to cook healthy fried dish for your child?
To make a healthy fried food for your little one, be sure it must be less oil or butter.

Why less is better? Because, oil and butter has no fiber, no water and little to no nutritional value. And one more thing about cooking oil, it is highly processed. Yet most of us parents can’t even think about frying and sauteing without an oil.

I think there’s a healthy oil
I think coconut oil was considered a good oil and that uncooked olive oil was very healthy. I used to think that way until I started to became familiar with the scientific literature on oils.

The way these oils become oils is very disgusting and it is mind-baffling that someone ever thought they would be suitable for human consumption. Oil engage a cruel extraction procedure which includes bleaching, deodorizing, and the highly toxic solvent hexane.

Why some cooking oil or butter are harmful?
The main reason why these oils and butter are harmful is that they have a high content of Omega – 6 fatty acid.

But why? We all know that omega – 3 and omega – 6 are the essential fatty acid in child’s brain and body development.

Omega fatty acid would only works well in a certain ratio. It used to be one is to one ratio (1:1), omega 3 & 6. If one shifts too high bad things will happen.

Seeds oils are high in omega – 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids that leads to increased endothelial dysfunction or inflammation in the body.

Oil potential harmful effect for infant
Having high level of omega – 6 fatty acid in mother’s milk, study shows that it associated with altered immune function in breast feed children's.

Should avoid oils
The following list of oil should be avoided due to high omega -6 fatty acid are;

  • Soybean oil
  • Canola Oil
  • Corn Oil
  • Safflower Oil
  • Cottonseed oil
  • Sunflower oil
  • Peanut Oil
  • Sesame oil
  • Rapeseed oil
  • Rice bran oil

Good cooking oil and butter for frying
Saturated fats still the best oil use in cooking and are the most stable in high temperature. This include;

  • Coconut oil
  • Olive oil
  • Fat from animal products (lard, tallow)

Lard – also know as white cooking fat: white, slightly soft, pork fat. Use: cooking, in ointments and perfumes.
Tallow - fatty substance: a hard fatty substance extracted from the fat of sheep and cattle. Use: candles, soap

Cooking oil or butter replacements

  • Broth and water are the most common substitute for cooking oil and butter. 
  • Instead of frying try roasting
  • Use a frying pan that exhibits impressive non-stick characteristics.
