Automatic Transmision shift position purposes and Downshifting speed
Automatic Transmission shift position purposes
P - Parking the vehicle or starting the car
R - Reversing
N - Neutral
D - Normal Driving
3 - Position for engine braking
2 - Position for more powerful engine braking
L - Position for maximum engine braking
Shifting to the D position selects the most suitable gear for the particular driving condition. Setting the shift lever in the D position is recommended for normal driving.
Automatic Transmission Downshift speed restriction
The maximum allowable speeds are as follows;
3 to 2 - maximum speed 80kph
2 to L - maximum speed 40kph
If the shift lever cannot be shifted from P
If the shift lever cannot be shifted with your foot on the brake pedal, there may be a problem with the shift lock system, a system to prevent accidental operation of the shift lever. The following steps may be used as an emergency measure to ensure that the shift lever can be shifted;
1. Set the parking brake
2. Turn the engine switch to the ACC position
3. Depress the brake pedal.
4. Press the shift lock override button if installed.
Caution when driving on slippery road surface
Do not accelerate or shift gears suddenly. Sudden changes in engine braking may cause the vehicle to spin or skid, resulting in an accident.
